What a letdown!, March 11, 2002

I have read numerous romance books but this is the first time i was compelled to leave a review. Read the 1st two stories and forget the 3rd. Love and laughter was supposed to be a light read but the 3rd story made my head spin. It was so ridiculous I couldn't believe I was reading it on print.

Are you a Jane Austen fan? Do you love books based on the seventeen hundreds? Well, then you are going to love the book I Was Jane Austen's Best Friend by Cora Harrison. It is funny, exciting, romantic, and so much more. I loved everything and everyone in the book. I will read this book again!
Jane and her mother, Mrs. Austen, are so funny, and Captain Thomas Williams is so charming and romantic! I loved every second of this book, and trust me: so will you! This is something tweens, teens and adults can all enjoy.

This relatively short book of just under 100 pages covers the life of John Coltrane in a consise, factual manner. It is a biography for the high school or advanced middle school student. There are many black and white photographs of John Coltrane and other musicans. There is quite a bit of anecdotal information and it moves along at a quick rate through John Coltranes life. His drug and alcohol abuse(and ultimate victory) is examined. His resulting change in habits is also detailed. His many bands and it's members are profiled including the ones he playd in as a sideman. Of note, his time with Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gilespie and Miles Davis is examined and the long lasting affects these musical relationships had on the development of John Coltrane. The book goes into the various recordings he made and the impact they had on contemporary jazz and future musicians.This book is perfect for the student who is making a biographical report because besides learning about probably the greatest jazz saxaphone player to ever walk the planet you will also learn about events of the time period during the civil rights era. As short biographies for students goes, this is a very good place to start your examination of the man simply known as, Trane. This book also features a nice timeline and a suggestion for further reading with books like Spirit Catcher: The Life and Art of John Coltrane and John Coltrane: His Life and Music (The Michigan American Music Series). The additional information provided for further research also includes organizations and online sites with web site addresses provided. Of special interest is the provided selected discography that has many of Trane's recordings. It includes such great discs such as the anthology The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings and seminal recordings like Giant Steps Afro Blue Impressions, My Favorite Things and his suite inspired by God, A Love Supreme which is the deluxe version with rare out takes and a live version of the suite. This is a great little book for a young students report. This book is recommended for high school and community libraries.

This is a book, I'd say, about a man of a certain age, who's done all his living, is tired, and asks himself all too frequently, why am I still hanging on. The plot is not as important as the honesty of the author's feelings and the artistry of the writing.

The honesty is that of an author expressing to you his likes and his dislikes, his disgust and his love, as they actually are. If you don't like them, you won't like this book either. The artistry of the writing is an unobtrusive blending of styles that shows that the author is a lover of books after all, despite whatever currently happens to be burning in Pepe Carvalho's fireplace: satirical portraits (the Marquess), sensitive portrayals (Yes, Biscuter), extremely trashy descriptions of sex (Pepe's), an outstanding description of a hangover ("Never again . . . ."), lots of hard-boiled detective talk, stream of consciousness a la Joyce, and, every so often, similes worthy of Vergil. And the food. Always the food.

By the end of the story we see that the world-weary tough guy has come to the rescue of quite a few damsels in distress and may be just a big softie after all. Maybe that's the secret of his appeal to women. But one could well ask how it is possible for an old guy to enjoy the company of so many different women and still be so down all the time. Well, it's his story, not yours. If you don't like the book, you know what you can do with it.

Once again Montalban hypnotizes us with his great story-telling ability, his poetry, his stunning metaphores and unforgettable characters. Detective literature never aimed this high. Winner of many prestigious awards including "The Raymond Chandler Award", Southern Seas introduces us to the figure of Pepe Carvalho, detective, gourmet, wine-expert, philosopher, lover, former member of the Communist Party and the CIA. The setting is Barcelona, Spain, in the post-Franco era. Images of rare beauty and impressive power alternate in this atypical "who done it?" story. Montalban succeeds in elevating the genre to a higher level and, perhaps, creates a genre on its own. More Montalban, please!

Great, satirical detective story of post Franco Barcelona, July 12, 2003

Highly recommended hard-boiled detective novel that looks at the cultural malaise of Spain in general and Barcelona in particular coming out of thirty years of Fascist dictatorship. Every character in this book has a serious political past and agenda, and they recite their political evolution and handily give the details of which party they recently voted for and why in the same fashion that Law & Order interviewees cynically give the details of their professional pitfalls. The hero Pepe Carvalho is so wacked out he burns books (but why is the question,) and he seems to be an overweight balding alcoholic with gourmand tendencies, but he's still a hit with the ladies. And the story is excellently written, and at once amusing and sad.

For those who imagine librarians are like what could have happened to the Donna Reed character if _A Wonderful Life_ hadn't, this volume demonstrates the engagement and vitality of library workers. They collect materials and then present them so that the public can make sense of information and knowledgeably take action. Beyond serving as a search engine, librarians find and deliver to their clienteles an array of useful, entertaining, and educational resources. Ours is a complex world, and we can appreciate assistance the library gives in understanding it.
_A True Politician_ chronicles the life of a librarian who held true to her job as a member of her community. It also offers a hint of romance. I'm glad that I read this inspiring book.

A Mainstay in My Clinical Library, October 30, 2010

I have been in practice since 1992; this book was a Godsend when it first came out, and continues to be a mainstay in my practice, i continue to learn from it and apply the information to my work.

It is also a lovely text on Shiatsu that would be very valuable to any Bodyworker or Massage Therapist that wants to take their work to the next level

Why can't a good textbook be beautiful? But it can!, October 5, 1997

Do you believe textbooks can't show any personality? Are you convinced reference books can't be beautiful or poetic? WRONG!!! I studied with Kiiko for a little over three years, and this book has all her attributes. It is beautifully organized and arranged, elegantly researched and argued, wide-ranging in its interests and as beautiful as any Japanese Ikebana. Everything in this volume is carefully conceived and executed, from the layout and design (even the paper is special--handle it and you'll see what I mean) to the extraordinary, handsome illustrations, to the extensive and very helpful bibliographies. They all reflect Kiiko herself and her attitude that everything in life should be done with complete attention, total organization, creativity and a sense of whimsy. If you look carefully, with an open mind, you may also notice that, when carefully considered, some of the ancient theories--when graphed--actually yield an illustration that looks startlingly like certain Western scientfic representations! (I won't spoil your fun by naming them here.) And for those of you who'd like a general summary of the text, it covers the development of acupuncture theory in Japan, the Hara (stomach palpation) diagnosis of the title, general summaries of the work of Kiiko's major teachers (including the extraordinary Dr. Manaka), and even a section on So Tai Ho, the Japanese form closely akin to chiropractic that uses gentle movements coordinated with breathing exercise to achieve pain relief and sometimes a much deeper level of healing. To top it all off, the illustrations intended to help practitioners are clear, as are the instructions. All in all, a beautiful, instructive volume. I loved it, even when I had to use it as a text in acupuncture school--and that's saying something! Whoever heard of someone loving their textbook?!!

Easy to undestand, clear explanations, unambiguous divisions of each section (verb, noun, idiom, prhasal verb, etc.) for each word. "Word partner" section and "Common mistakes" and "Tesaurus" boxes are really useful to the English learner, you could learn grammar and improve your vocabulary at the same time using just one book or cd-rom. The CD allow you to practice and listen to English pronuntiation. And the cherry of the cake is the cd-rom's SMART thesaurus, use it to avoid word repetitions and for getting a better English. Without a doubt is a must-have.
